In subtropical Taiwan, suitable conifer species to train as bonsai are lacking, particularly when it relates to pine (Pinus) species. Although several two needle pines are currently being trained for bonsai in I the island, I believe that none is as beautiful and visually pleasing as I Taiwan Five Needle Pine, Pinus morrisonicola. First described in 1908 by the infamous Japanese botanist Hayata Bunzo (BB Xijlt), Taiwanese Five Needle Pine was taxonomically named in honor of Taiwan's Mount Morrison, now known as Yushan Mountain (illl), where this type of species was initially collected. On a side note, the old name of Mount Morrison is generally thought to have been in honor of the 19th-century missionary Robert Morrison. Today, the mountain is referred to as Yushan or Jade Mountain.
