Newcomers to the world of bonsai are often welcomed with enthusiasm and an admonition to follow "the rules". This admonition does offer a shortcut to performing the necessary bonsai operations in a successful manner. There are rules giving guidance on design, horticultural care, and display. However, as one progresses in bonsai, "the rules" can be very limiting. Most of us are inclined to follow rules so frustration results when the rules don't seem to make sense or are impossible to apply.
