A New Cold Work PM-Grade Combining High Wear Resistance with High Ductility

Abstract Abrasive wear, cracking, and chipping are the most critical failure mechanisms in cold work tooling operations, such as blanking and forming, fine blanking, deep drawing, cold forging, powder compacting, and more. A good combination of wear resistance and ductility is needed to meet the requirements for long tool life and avoid breakage of tools. An altered chemical composition of a?PM-produced cold work steel resulted in a?product with the optimized carbide size and type and high wear resistance combined with high ductility. Moreover, machinability of the developed steel increased as a?result of the refined microstructure. The properties of the new steel were illustrated with the un-notched impact testing and pin-on-disc test as well as machining trials in comparison with the existing cold work grades from Uddeholm. The performance of the new grade Uddeholm Vanadis?8 SuperClean was verified in several application tests. The combination of ductility, wear resistance, hardness, and compressive strength makes it an ideal tool steel for long run tooling.]]>
