The continuing trend in supporting closed operations with flexible single-use solutions (SUSs) designed for continuous processing reflects a paradigm shift in biopharmaceutical facility design. Now used in manufacturing almost all new products in early clinical trials, SUSs are applied progressively in good manufacturing practice (GMP) environments as well. The combination of SUSs and continuous bioprocessing is changing the industry's conception of itself, making a significant impact on facility design by offering smaller equipment footprints and substantially lower cleaning requirements than traditional batch processing in stainless-steel equipment. Implementation of continuous process monitoring, in turn, guarantees process stability to raise overall efficiency.
