The Malachowski-Wright-Giemsa stain: a many-splendored thing.

"Simple" has never been a descriptor of the widely used Wright-Giemsa stain. Rather, the stain has been characterized sporadically as magical, enigmatic, exquisite, capricious, and fiendishly complex. Its history is long and surprisingly exciting, its applications are numerous and its execution is an art form. How it works, however, has been defined only recently. Its numerous appellations over the decades have included the Romanowsky stain, the Liu stain, the Lillie stain, the Wright stain, the Giemsa stain, the May-Griinwald-Giemsa stain and even the atrocious "Ehrlich-Chenzinsky-Plehn-Malachowski-Romanowky-Nocht-Jenner-May-Grunwald-Leishman-Reuter-Wright-Giemsa-Lillie-Roe-Wilcox" stain. To this list, I now add the more historically accurate "Malachowski stain," while retaining "Wright-Giemsa" for consistency and recognition.
