Reaming is a process for finishing holes to a precise tolerance and imparting fine surface finishes. When reaming large-diameter holes, typically from 17mm to 300mm (0.669" to 11.811"), ring-style reamers, or cutting rings, are an attractive option for a variety of reasons. "Large-diameter solid tools can be expensive simply because of the mass of material needed to manufacture the tool," said Jamie Rosen-berger, product manager at Allied Machine & Engineering Corp., Dover, Ohio. "If you were using a solid or brazed-style jobber reamer, you'd have to replace the entire tool after it was worn out. With rings, you just replace a portion of it."
