Solidified Crust Analysis of Basic Tundish Slag during Continuous Casting for Clean Steel Production

It is well known that traditional acidic powder such as rice husk has a great function of thermal isolation, but induces serious corrosion of ladle liner material. The basic tundish slag has already substituted for the acidic powder to produce clean steel. Although these basic tundish powders have good ability to absorb Al2O3, they also have other problems such as crust formation on surface of liquid steel that prevents free operation of tundish during sequence casting, and severely corrodes Al2O3 /graphite SEN1, 2). In order to clarify the formation mechanism of solidified crust of basic tundish slag, phase compositions and micro-structures of solidified crusts from the industrial spot were analyzed by XRD, SEM and EDX. The useful information for developing a new type of basic tundish powder was obtained.
