In my last column, I noted that machine shops looking to survive the recession and plan for the future should focus on supplying winning industries. This column examines who those winners might be. But first some good news. Lately there is speculation in the media and occasional facts indicating the recession may have hit bottom. Or not. As the old Buffalo Springfield song says, "Something's happening here/What it is ain't exactly clear." I'm not confident enough to call this one yet, but new orders for manufactured goods rose in February after six consecutive monthly declines, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. Orders were up 6.1 billion dollars, or 1.8 percent, to 352.2 billion dollars, following a 3.5 percent decrease in January.
