One of the chronic complaints in the metalworking industry is the inability to find and retain enough skilled workers. It's almost a cliche at this point, but the statistical and anecdotal evidence I've seen back it up. At a recent manufacturing roundtable session sponsored by Cutting Tool Engineering (see the December CTE, p. 68), some of the liveliest discussion focused on this issue. One participant noted the difficulty he had just in organizing a trip for high school students to visit IMTS 2008 and another bemoaned the very low rate of participation in tuition reimbursement programs for current employees to further their technical educations.
