Medical Scientist Training Programs: federal funding offers support and drives innovation.

Dr.Wiley's proposal to eliminate federal support for Medical Scientist Training Programs (MSTPs) in favor of funding individual physician-scientist trainees relates to a long-standing problem in the funding for training of physician-scientists in the United States, namely that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) support for predoctoral research training has been relatively flat for many years. To compound the problem, the MSTP that is supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is one of many predoctoral institutional training programs supported by the Institute, meaning that there is no fixed number of funded physician-scientist trainee positions.
