Regional differences in UK grain prices are set to widen this harvest with HGCA planting survey results confirming a drop of more than 20% in wheat area nationally, but with the north east of England down 28.6%. September ex-farm feed wheat prices offered in early July ranged from about ￡93/t in southern England to ￡108/t in north-west Scotland, already a larger gap than usual. Plantings suffered a great deal more in these regions than others and even without accounting for increased demand from the new Ensus bioethanol plant on Tees-side, grain would have to travel north from other regions, said Jack Watts, senior analyst for cereals and oilseeds at HGCA.
