Houston-Galveston ports turned net crude exporter in April as refineries ran full tilt.

An Aug. 20 report from the US EIA showed that exports from the district were 15K b/d higher than its imports in April, but that difference flew open to 470K b/d in May. (The Houston-Galveston port district includes the ports of Houston, Galveston, Texas City, Freeport, Port Lavaca, and Corpus Christi as well as the Sugar Land Regional Airport and the Houston Intercontinental Airport.) In May, the district imported around 930K b/d and it exported around 1.4MM b/d. Total crude exports from the US reached a 2MM-b/d record high that same month. Turner, Mason & Co. projects total US exports of crude could be nearly 6MM b/d within four years. The district's share of total US crude exports was at a record high of 70% in May after averaging just over 50% since mid-2017. Just northeast of Houston-Galveston, the Port Arthur port district (which also includes the ports of Beaumont, Orange, and Sabine) has represented nearly 25% of US crude exports since mid-2017.
