Acceleration of the United States on-demand genetic testing industry

The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted permission to a company to provide limited health information directly to consumers for the first time, bypassing the need for doctors or genetic counsellors. The company in question is 23andMe, a prominent direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing service based in Mountain View, California. On 6 April 2017. the FDA provided 23andMe with approval to screen for ten health-related genetic conditions.
