Since 1995, induced abortion rates have fallen worldwide.1 Unfortunately, the rate of unsafe abortion and the consequences of it have not. Every year, about 8 million women and their families endure the devastating complications of unsafe abortion. Of these women, only 5 million receive medical attention and about 70000 die. Despite liberalisation of abortion laws in 19 countries since 1997/ access to safe abortion remains elusive for many, because of the urban location of facilities, poor awareness, costs, cultural issues, and a shortage of trained physicians.
