Australia’s chief economist has forecast coal exports from Australia to grow and prices to fall over the next three years. In the most recent Resource and Energy Quarterly publication, Australian Government Chief Economist Mark Cully forecasts the Newcastle benchmark price to decline from an average $105/metric tonne FOB in 2018 to $84/t FOB in 2019 and $75/t FOB in 2020. Similarly, Cully forecast the Japanese thermal coal reference to decline in line with spot prices, from $110 a tonne in the Japanese financial year (JFY) 2018- 19 to $83 a tonne in JFY 2019-20 and $72 a tonne in JFY 2020-21.
