Steam coal’s contribution to South Africa’s energy mix will fall over the next decade, but the fossil fuel will remain by far the main source for Eskom’s power stations, despite the rise of gas and renewables, said the minister for mineral resources and energy. Minister Gwede Mantashe on Friday unveiled details of the government’s updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which outlines the country’s energy mix to 2030. The Cabinet approved the plan on Thursday.
