Singapore—Lackluster Chinese seaborne thermal coal demand have limited the potential upside of Kalimantan export prices amid thin trades and a supply-demand imbalance, sources said Sept. 8. A Singapore-based trader said Indonesian supply outweighed seaborne demand, and consumption from China was not catching up. “Market participants are expecting China to return in Q4 but there’s no indications yet,” he said. A South China-based trader talked about muted seaborne interests, and noted a dip in import volumes over the last few months. China’s thermal coal imports fell 37.3% year on year at 20.7 million mt in August, showed latest data from the General Administration of Customs.
