London—South African thermal coal exports totaled 6.12 million mt in July, down 2% on the month but up 24% on the year, according to the latest customs data Sept. 3. The rise on a year-ago basis bucks the trend of the last several months as demand in the seaborne market had been notably weaker, as evidenced by January-July exports being 41 million mt, down 5% on the year.
