Sierra extends Peru copper-zinc mine shutdown amid pandemic

Pittsburgh—Sierra Metals has extended the suspension of mining operations at its Yauricocha copper-zinc mine in Peru until May 10 after the nation’s government announced the continuation of a lockdown order to contain the advancement of the coronavirus pandemic, the company said Monday. “Our primary goal is to facilitate a rampup back to normal levels as quickly and efficiently as possible once the suspensions are lifted,” CEO Igor Gonzales said in a statement. “It is worth noting that we do have flexibility at Yauricocha to run operations at higher throughput levels, which will help us to recover some of the lost production.”
