China’s magnesium output to fall 7% on year in 2020; exports to fall 18%: CNIA

China’s magnesium output is forecast to fall 7% year on year to 900,000 mt in 2020, while exports are forecast to fall 17.5% to 400,000 mt, the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association said Sept. 30. The country produced 969,000 mt of magnesium in 2019, and exported 485,000 mt, the association said. CNIA attributed the forecast decline in exports to 44% of total output in 2020 from 50% in 2019 to efforts by the Chinese government to develop a domestic magnesium smelting and processing sector and prevailing weak export sales.
