Production at the world’s largest copper mine rose in the first three months of the year but profits fell amid a sharp fall in the price of the red metal. The BHP-operated Escondida mine in northern Chile produced 297,219 mt of copper in the quarter, up 8.2% from the same period last year, management said June 26. Production of copper in concentrates rose to 227,600 mt, up 7.1%, while production of copper cathode reached 69,619 mt, up 11.7% from a year earlier.
