Rome—New car sales in Italy in December rose 12.5% year on year to 140,075 from 124,535 in December 2018, according to Italian transport ministry data released on Thursday after the financial markets closed in Europe. Car sales in Italy in the whole of 2019 gained 0.3% to 1.92 million units compared to 1.91 million sold in 2018, the data showed. Italy’s economy has been struggling amid weak growth rates and a high public debt burden. Its gross domestic product edged up 0.1% in the third quarter after being flat in the second quarter and after expanding 0.1% in the first three months of 2019, according to the data.
