China’s bauxite imports rise 19.7% on year in August

China’s bauxite imports reached 10.33 million mt in August, up 19.7% on the year but down 6% on the month, according to S&P Global Platts calculations based on latest data from the General Administration of China Customs. The imports, which hit a record high of 11 million mt in July, are likely to stay at elevated in the coming months as Chinese alumina producers — the major consumer of bauxite — bring new projects on stream in the wake of rising demand.
