Codelco restarts northern Chile copper mines after torrential rains

Chile’s Codelco has restarted production at two of its copper mines in northern Chile hit by torrential rains and flooding, which left six dead and hundreds homeless across the region. In statements released over the weekend, the state-owned copper producer said normal operations have resumed at its giant Chuquicamata open pit and the associated smelter, and the smaller Ministro Hales mine. The Chuquicamata complex produced 330,910 mt of copper in 2017, while Ministro Hales produced 215,086 mt.
