Several times in the past few months I have thought of the supposed Chinese curse"May you live in interesting times". As many of you may be aware, my employer isthe Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) and there isconsiderable political turmoil at present concerning us. I don't intend to use thisCurrent item to litigate the rights and wrongs of what has happened; that would bean abuse of the position of President of the society and probably be rather boring toread. However, I would like to reflect on what role our society can play when waterresource management debates go beyond science.
