ArcelorMittal plans restart of Liberia 15 mil mt/year iron ore concentrate project

London—Steel and mining group ArcelorMittal said Nov. 5 it plans to restart an expansion of its Liberia iron ore operation to 15 million mt/ year of concentrate sinter feed in 2021 with a budget of $800 million. ArcelorMittal seeks to produce a premium-grade concentrate switching over from the fourth quarter of 2023 to replace the existing direct shipped ore which has been shipped since 2011, the company said in a Nov. 5 quarterly report. The expansion, when completed, will eventually triple the group's current output from Liberia of unprocessed iron ore fines.
