Global pig iron output falls; iron ore demand reliant on China

London—Global pig iron production outside China has contracted by a quarter in April, which is leading to greater reliance for seaborne iron ore markets to find buyers in China. Pig iron output in April outside China totaled 28.9 million mt, down 25% from 38.8 million mt in April 2019, the latest World Steel Association data showed. China accounted for 72 million mt of pig iron output in April, down 1.2% on a year earlier. In the first four months of 2020, China’s pig iron output had risen by 1.4% on year to 271 million mt, while the rest of the world saw its contribution fall by 9.3%. EU pig iron output fell by almost 11% over the period to 27 million mt.
