London—Hydrogen has key cost and supply challenges to become a viable fuel for steel and ironmaking, with technology developers gearing up to switch from natural gas, according to industry sources and analysts. Hydrogen replacing natural gas to process iron ore in direct reduction iron (DRI) plants at a commercial scale is still several years away, with industry targets for commercial steel production at scale via hydrogen-fired iron units happening sometime between 2035-50. For hydrogen to gain traction, this may also depend on renewable electricity developments and carbon capture and storage, with carbon prices rising to make up for the difference in steel costs from blast furnaces.
