Sweden's SSAB, LKAB seek progress on green steel to slash emissions

London—Swedish steel producer SSAB’s plans to wean itself off coking coal and shut blast furnaces in Oxelosund first before closing units in Lulea and in Raahe, Finland, hinges on the success of its HYBRIT venture with iron ore pellet supplier LKAB. LKAB, which recently became SSAB's largest shareholder, and utility Vattenfall are helping supply biofuel-fired iron ore pellets and renewable power for hydrogen production using electrolysis, which will allow hot-briquetted iron to be produced under the HYBRIT project.
