Bankrupt Whiting First US E&P Domino to Fall

Bakken tight oil producer Whiting Petroleum has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, making it the first large US exploration and production company to do so in the current downturn. The Denver-based company opted not to make a $260 million debt payment that was due Apr. 1 and will instead look to restructure its balance sheet through a prepackaged agreement with its lenders.
