IEA: Energy-Related Emissions Stabilized Last Year

After two years of increases, global energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide were relatively stable in 2019 at 33 gigatons. The stabilization mainly reflected a sharp decline in power sector emissions in advanced economies, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Power sector emissions fell as a result of an expansion of generation from renewables (especially wind and solar), fuel switching from coal to natural gas, and increased output of nuclear power. On the other hand, this was offset by rising emissions from consumption of oil and gas (IOD Feb.3’20).
