The authors became aware that a mistake was made in the calculation and preparation of the solution used for the intravenous ethanol administration throughout these studies. The ethanol concentration is correct, but the vehicle used was hypotonic with regard to the NaCI concentration (0.06 M) instead of isotonic. The saline controls were correctly prepared and the concentration of NaCi in the control solution was 0.15 M. This error in the preparation of the ethanol solution could possibly affect the dopamine responses we reported in the manuscript. The authors believe that the conclusions they report in the manuscript are still valid on the basis of the following additional information. Subsequent studies have been carried out in their lab that used isotonic ethanol (1.0g/kg) administered intravenously, and the magnitude of the dopamine response in the shell of the nucleus accumbens and its time course are very similar to what is reported in Howard et al. (2008). Furthermore, their major findings of a differential response in core vs. shell were done by directly comparing the effects of the hypotonic ethanol intravenous infusion in both groups. The authors have not yet carried out additional studies in the core using isotonic ethanol, and so they cannot rule out the possibility that the differential response between core and shell that they reported in Howard et al. (2008) may be altered if they had used isotonic ethanol in both regions.
