Barge prices in the United States (US) have risen 30% compared toa year ago and aren’t expected to ease until late fall or early winter.An increase in the amount of coal moving on the river systemcoupled with competition with grain shipments has put bargeavailability at a premium according to both coal production andshipping sources. A year ago shipments from the Big Sandy Riverin West Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico was priced atapproximately $15.75/st. That same move today is costingshippers between $23 and $24.50/st.
