Atlantic thermal markets have been volatile over the past twoweeks, but Richards Bay values at least recovered after a run oflosses in both the South African and Northwest European markets.In Northwest Europe, prices have been under downwardpressure on a lack of firm trading interest, but a recent coldsnap helped improve power prices and coal burn.Coal burn in Europe is also struggling to compete against naturalgas, as record-high carbon prices favour gas-fired electricitygeneration. Prices fell below $80.00/t DES AR on 12 February – thelowest level since end-June 2017 – and a March cargo traded onFriday at $80.50/t DES AR for 50,000 t of multi-origin plus US.
