Asian coal-fired power production shows strong growth in 2017

Increases in coal-fired power production were seen across mostof Asia in 2017.Coal-fired generation in the two largest markets, China andIndia, grew by 6.3% and 4.5% on the year respectively. Total powerproduction by both countries increased by similar levels.All the other Asian countries tracked by MCR (see table) alsoshowed solid growth in coal-fired power generation, with the onlyexception being Thailand.Thailand has yet to finalise its data for 2017, but its performanceto November showed a 3.0% decrease in coal-fired powergeneration, despite a modest 1.0% rise in total power production.
