Vietnam grows more reliant on coal imports as domestic falls short

Vietnam is becoming increasingly dependent on imports to meet rising power demand, with key domestic miners expected to bring in around 12 mt to cover shortfalls in their coal supply this year, and as much as 15 mt in 2020. “Domestic coal producers Vinacomin and Dong Bac have a combined production of around 50 mt but they have imported 8 mt for the first three quarters of this year so far to support power generation,” Andy Bui, CEO of Anvietphat Energy said at the Coaltrans conference in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Tuesday (5 November).
