China Oct coal imports up 11% on year, down 15% on month

China’s coal imports were up 11% on the year in October, but fell sharply from September, to 25.7 mt, the latest provisional customs data show. This reflected weaker orders from utilities as temperatures cooled, while the Golden Week holiday, that started on 1 October, also disrupted port activities and slowed down clearance. October was down 4.6 mt from September, marking the lowest monthly level since April, as purchases from power plants eased amid falling consumption.
