Demand for Queensland metallurgical coal has surged in the ex-China markets, led by post monsoon restocking by Indian steel mills with Japan, Korea and Brazil contributing, according to suppliers. The initial focus was on clearing tonnage deferred from the slowdowns in Q2, but enquiries have now switched to optional volumes but several suppliers said in many cases they are unable to meet the new demand, potentially forcing these buyers onto spot markets.
