Coal stocks at Indian power plants were stable in the latest week as generation slipped slightly on curtailed demand and higher hydropower availability during the ongoing monsoon, expected to last until September. Stocks at the 135 coal-fired plants (162.53 GW) monitored by the country’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) were 39.52 mt as on 17 August, almost stable from 39.68 mt on 10 August. Stocks on 17 August were down 8% on the month and 22% on the quarter, but still up 68% on the year (see table), with heavy rain in August last year severely impacting domestic coal production and supplies.
