Colombian 2020 thermal exports seen slumping to 14-year low

Colombian thermal coal exports could fall to their lowest in 14 years this year to 61.5-64.4 mt, according to data compiled by IHS Markit from industry and government sources. A combination of poor demand in the international thermal coal market due to the coronavirus-induced global economic shutdown, competition from natural gas and renewables generation and reduced coal output in Colombia could see exports fall to their weakest since 2006 when the country exported 58.3 mt. Compared to 2019, exports are expected to be down by 12.0-14.9 mt.
