Re-establishing the lost migration route of the northern bald ibis requiredhistorical detective work, a champion microlight pilot and a team that I could tackle illegal bird hunting in Europe, reports Chelsea Wald.In Vienna's former imperial zoo this spring, an overgrown grey princeling shimmied his behind over a ledge and...plop. Though he didn't know it, this fuzzy chick and his 14 nest-mates represented a new hope for the northern bald ibis, a large black bird with a bald red head, feathery crown and curlew-like bill. Hatched in the spring, the chicks were hand-raisedby two doting human foster parents at the zoo and then transferred to their training grounds near Salzburg.
