Miss Phos Costs Taxpayers $750K per Month; EPA Moves to Make Superfund Site

The Mississippi Phosphates Corp. site in Pascagoula, Miss., has been costing taxpayers $750,000 per month since February 2017. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2014 and ceased operations, leaving a 1,080-acre site with soil and groundwater pollution, in addition to a phosphogypsum stack. Rainfall on the gypstacks produces a large volume of highly acidic wastewater. A fertilizer plant operated at the location since the late 1950s.
