摘要

The head of the Irish government, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, has said Ireland will prohibit exploration for oil but not for natural gas, as he emphasised the role gas has to play as a “transition fuel” that Ireland will rely on for decades to come. Speaking at the UN Climate Action Summit 2019 in New York, Varadkar said Ireland’s independent Climate Change Advisory Council had recommended that exploration for oil should end, but that natural gas exploration should “continue for now, as a transition fuel that we will need for decades to come while alternatives are developed and fully deployed”.
