IOCB Prague - Excellent Basic Research and Successful Applications

IOCB was founded in 1953 by Prof. Franti?ek ?orm (1913-1980) as the Institute of Organic Chemistry, later renamed Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1960-1992) and since 1993 of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Figure 1). From the very beginning, Prof. ?orm established IOCB as an interdisciplinary institute working at the interface of chemistry, biology, and medicine (which is now called chemical biology) by a smart combination of chemical and biological research groups and teams working in the same field. Even in those early days, he could identify the key research areas, such as nucleosides and nucleic acids, peptides and proteins, terpenoids and steroids; as well as methodologydriven organic synthesis, in which IOCB pioneered the cuttingedge research and made seminal contributions.
