The cost of fertilizer freight held relatively steady this week though the market was poised to push higher as both charterers and owners have been expecting a September spike. Trading in the US Gulf remained minimal after Hurricane Harvey and while some ports have returned to full capacity others have not. But the lack of trading has kept the market steady so impact on rates has been seen yet. Brokers suggested that rates will not start to push higher until producers declare force majeure and consumers are forced to scrabble for new cargoes and book spot vessels.
