Uncertainty still surrounds how a cap on the sulphur content in marine fuel will work only a year and half before it comes into force. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) decided in October 2016 to reduce the sulphur level in marine fuels to 0.5pc from January 2020 from 3.5pc now. Shipowners will either have to burn compliant fuels, such as new 0.5pc fuel oil blends, marine gasoil (MGO) or LNG, or install scrubbing technology that will enable them to continue to use high-sulphur fuel oil (HSFO).
