Heavy sweet crudes go straight to bunker pool

Heavy low-sulphur crude values are surging in Asia-Pacifc, in part because the grades are being blended directly into bunker fuel to meet new IMO rules. Demand for Australian, South Sudanese and UK heavy sweet crudes has been rising in Asia-Pacifc in the run-up to the implementation of the IMO’s tighter sulphur limits for marine fuels next year. The crudes are all high-density and low- sulphur, typically with 65-70pc straight-run fuel oil yields under simple distilla- tion. Many of them meet key bunker fuel specifcation limits, and can be refned or mixed directly with other blendstocks to produce low-sulphur fuel oil, either on ships or in onshore storage tanks.
