RBCT’s Europe exports climb in September

South African exports from Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) slipped in September amid weaker demand from Asia-Pacific, but Europe-bound loadings reached a 21-month high as off-specification spot prices became competitive. RBCT exported 6.4mn t in September, down by 630,200t on the year but the highest for any month since March. Third-quarter exports slipped to 16.5mn t, down from a quarterly peak of 19.6mn t in the same period of 2017, and lower than the July-September 2014-16 average of 17.6mn t. January-September loadings fell by 2.6mn t on the year to 52mn t, meaning that to meet its 2018 target of 77mn t RBCT will need to export an average of 8.3mn t/month for the rest of this year.
