Pakistan’s thermal coal imports fell on the year in May as a weaker rupee slowed industrial sector demand, although higher seaborne power plant deliveries limited falls. Pakistan received 1.13mn t of thermal coal last month, down by 171,100t from May 2018 and extending three consecutive months of year-on-year declines, data from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) show. Seaborne imports of South African coal rose by 50,700t on the year to 864,200t in May, while Indonesian imports fell by 11,100t to 264,200t. But overall imports fell as buyers did not book coal from other origins for delivery in May. Import sources were more diverse in May 2018, with 110,000t coming from Colombia and 100,700t from Russia.
