Spain boosts thermal coal imports in October

Spain’s seaborne thermal coal imports in October were attheir highest level for the month since 2012, as importsremained supported by faltering domestic production.Spain imported 1.68mn t of thermal coal in October,up by 24pc compared with the same month a year earlier,according to data from Spain’s customs bureau. This wasthe highest level for the month since 2012 when a severedrought reduced hydropower availability and boostedutilities’ demand for thermal coal. The increase in Octobertook imports for the first ten months of the year to 13.4mnt, compared with 10.5mn t in the same period in 2014, anincrease of 27.6pc. Again this was the highest for the periodsince 2012 when Spain landed 15.1mn t in the January toOctober period.
